There is usually a floor under the carpet
Middlesbrough's terraced core, Gresham, Newport, Ayresome and Grove Hill, was built with suspended pine floors on joists, and a great many of them are still there under decades of carpet and underlay. Later estates and rental stock
Coulby Newham, Hemlington, Berwick Hills and Ormesby are largely slab-built, which makes levelling compound at £8 to £15 per m² the recurring extra rather than a plywood overlay. Middlesbrough also has a very large private rented and student sector around the university and TS1, where the sensible specification is settled: AC4 laminate in the bedrooms and lounge, LVT in the kitchen, sheet vinyl in the bathroom, and matting at the front door.
